TEAM Building Exercise

ACTIVITY 1: ENVELOPES

  1. One envelope with one letter on it given to everyone. Example: one person gets a T, another a E, another a A, another a M; repeat for all participants; inside the sealed envelope, a balloon (different colors)
  2. Ask everyone to stand up and find their match
  3. Then ask folks to group in 4s

Debrief:   Did all the Es stay together and all the As stay together, or did they mix and match and spell TEAM? Why? We move toward what is like us; but we have to remember that we need diversity to make a good team.

ACTIVITY 2: 4 PERSONALITY TYPES (team roles)

  • Direct
  • Spirited
  • Systematic
  • Considerate
  • Give envelopes to people with type on it.
  • Have them write attributes of that type on index card.
  • Place in envelope, pass to next table
  • Repeat, repeat.

Last time have people open envelope, read cards, pick top 3 attributes; make sure people do not rate their own cards

Debrief: What does the person bring to the team? Use for teambuilding, diversity, brainstorming

ACTIVITY 3: Cryptogram puzzle

  • < 2 minutes = 200 points
  • > 2 minutes = 50 points

How quickly did you change back to the way you were?

ACTIVITY 5: EMOTIONAL CONTAGION

  • Everyone stand up
  • Everyone close your eyes
  • Facilitator picks one person as “designated frowner”
  • Designated frowner to frown at 3 people

  • Once you’ve frowned at 3 people, sit down
  • These those 3 people frown at 3
  • Repeat, repeat
  • Everyone stand up
  • Everyone close your eyes
  • Now do exercise with “designated smiler”

Debrief: No designated smiler was actually chosen; emotions are contagious
